Kabuki-za
Dramatic, intensely visual kabuki is Japan's most re-
cognised art form. It developed during the reign of
the shōgun and was shaped by the decadent tastes of
Edo's increasingly wealthy merchant class - resulting
in the breathtaking costumes and elaborate stagecraft
that characterise the form. Kabuki-za is Tokyo's ka-
buki theatre. Established in 1889, the theatre re-
opened after a lengthy reconstruction in 2013. The
new building, designed by architect Kuma Kengō, is a
blend of traditional elegance and modern sensibilit-
ies, with scarlet and gold throughout.
