Imperial Palace
The Imperial Palace, residence of Japan's emperor,
occupies pride of place in the city centre. It also occu-
pies the site where Edo-jō, the Tokugawa shōgun's
castle, once stood. While the palace is closed to the
public, visitors can take a free guided tour of the
grounds. The Imperial Palace East Garden, open
without reservation and also free, preserves some of
the original castle masonry and is an attractive re-
treat from the bustle of downtown Tokyo.
