In-Depth Information
Most train stations have multiple exits. Look for maps in the station that show
which exits are closest to major area landmarks.
Train Passes
Suica ( www.jreast.co.jp/e/pass/suica ) This is a prepaid train pass fitted with an electromag-
netic chip. To use it, swipe it over the card reader on any automatic ticket gates. It works on
all city trains, subways and buses, and makes transferring between multiple lines and cal-
culating fares a no-brainer. Get one from a ticket vending machine at any JR station; note
that Suica cards require a ¥500 deposit, refundable when you return it to a JR window.
Suica & N'EX (Narita) or Suica & Monorail (Haneda) packages, available at either airport
from the JR EAST Travel Service Centers ( http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/customer_support/ser-
vice_center.html ), are an excellent deal combining a prepaid Suica card with discounted
transport to and from the airport.
Day passes Can save you money if you plan to cover a lot of ground in one day. You'll
need to get one that covers the rail lines you'll be using, and purchase it from one of the
station windows on those lines:
Tokyo Metro 1-Day Open Ticket costs ¥710 (child ¥360) and covers Tokyo Metro sub-
way lines.
Common 1-Day Ticket costs ¥1000 (child ¥500) and covers both Tokyo Metro and Toei
subway lines.
Tokyo Combination Ticket costs ¥1580 (child ¥790) and covers JR trains in Tokyo and
all subway lines.
