Tokyo accommodation runs the gamut from sumptuous luxury hotels to cheap
dorm rooms in converted warehouses.
›
While boutique hotels haven't really taken off here, ryokan (traditional inns) fill
the need for small-scale lodgings with heaps of character; you'll find these in tradi-
tional areas such as Ueno and Yanaka.
›
Asakusa is the
de facto
backpacker neighbourhood, home to the highest con-
centration of hostels.
›
For top end, look to upscale districts such as Marunouchi, Ginza and Roppongi.
›
Business hotels, though bland, fall squarely in the middle and exist in every ma-
jor hub, including Shinjuku and Shibuya - two neighbourhoods that make conveni-
ent bases.
›
Advanced booking is highly recommended. Not only will you get a better price at
most hotels, but even at hostels walk-ins can fluster staff. Note that some
midrange and budget options do not accept credit cards.
