Pop Culture
From giant robots to saucer-eyed schoolgirls to a ubiquitous kitty, Japanese pop
culture is a phenomenon that has reached far around the world. At the centre of
the manga and anime vortex is the neighbourhood of Akihabara. For eye-popping
street fashion, look to Shibuya and Harajuku.
Akihabara Otaku
Otaku gets translated as 'geek', but means someone who is passionately obsessed
with something. More often than not that passion is anime (Japanese animation)
or manga (Japanese comics), but it can also be used to describe a devoted fan of a
pop idol or a collector of model trains. The otaku 's natural habitat is Akihabara,
where comic bookstores, cosplay (costume play) cafes and electronics outfitters
come together in a blaze of neon.
Shibuya Pop
Shibuya is the centre of Tokyo's teen culture. Here, the latest fashion trends grow
legs, pop stars perform on giant TV screens and nightclubs and karaoke parlours
glow all night long.
Harajuku Fashion
Harajuku continues to turn out fascinating fashion tribes, from goth-loli (think
zombie Little Bo Peep) of the last decade to today's doli-kei (doll-style) girls, who
model their look after cherub-cheeked dolls.
