Nightlife & Live Music
Tokyo's nightlife is one of the city's highlights. Whatever stereotypes you may
have held about Japanese people being quiet and reserved will fall to pieces after
dark. Tokyo is a work hard, play hard kind of place and you'll find people out any
night of the week. There is truly something for everyone here, from sky-high
lounges to grungy hole-in-the-walls.
What's Hot Now
In the last few years, the craft beer scene has exploded in and around Tokyo, pro-
ducing a number of respected breweries and beer bars, such as Harajuku Tap-
room ( Click here ) and Craftheads ( Click here ). Another recent trend is the rise
of the tachinomi-ya (literally 'standing bar'), small, lively joints where patrons
crowd around the bar. Karaoke remains ever popular in the land of its birth; to

Clubbing & Live Music
Tokyo has a healthy club scene, centred mostly around Shibuya and Roppongi.
Friday and Saturday are the big nights out, though most clubs have something go-
ing on nearly every night. Discount flyers can be downloaded from most club web-
sites. While bars don't ask for ID, clubs do: you must be 20 to enter and you must
have a picture ID - even if you are decades beyond 20.
Tokyo's home-grown live music scene has turned out some good acts, often
found playing around Shibuya, Ebisu and Shimo-Kitazawa. To find out what club
and live music events are happening when you're in town, check out Metropolis
