The Bathing Pools
Ōedo Onsen Monogatari has both indoor and outdoor tubs, called rotemburo ,
separated by gender. Part of the fun is hopping from bath to bath trying out the
different temperatures and styles. There are jet baths, pools of natural rock and,
on the ladies' side, personal bucket-shaped baths made of cedar. The water, rich in
sodium chloride, is said to be good for aches and pains.
Wearing a Yukata
The first thing you'll do when you arrive is change into a yukata , a light, summer
kimono. You'll have your pick from a variety of colours; rental is included in the
admission price. It's worn with the left side over the right, tied at the waist for wo-
men and at the hips for men.
The Garden & Foot Bath
Outside is a Japanese-style garden with a 50m long ashi-yu (foot bath) snaking
through the centre. Visitors dressed in yukata stroll through the ankle deep water,
keeping their feet warm no matter how chill the air. On the bottom are stones de-
signed to stimulate the pressure points on the soles of the feet.
The Town
At the centre of the complex you'll find carnival-style games and food vendors, in-
tended to re-create the feel of an old-time street festival - an atmosphere en-
hanced by the fact that everyone is in yukata . This is your chance to try your luck
slinging shuriken (ninja throwing stars).
