Tokyo National Museum
Holds the world's largest collection of Japanese art
including pottery, sculpture, samurai swords, ukiyo-e
(wood-block prints) and exquisite kimono. There are
several buildings; the most important is the Honkan
(Main or Japan Gallery), built in the imperial style of
the 1930s with art deco flourishes throughout. Exhib-
itions here are designed to give visitors an overview
of Japanese art history throughout the past millen-
nia. Highlights include the 7th century Buddhist rel-
ics inside the Gallery of Hōryū-ji Treasures and the
Asian artefacts in the Tōyōkan (Gallery of Eastern
Antiquities).
