The Sights in a Day
Get an early start and head to Ueno Station on the JR Yamanote Line.
From there, walk to the Tokyo National Museum ( Click here ). Spend
the morning exploring the museum's vast collection of Japanese art and antiquit-
ies, allowing at least two hours to cover the highlights. Next stroll through leafy
Ueno-kōen ( Click here ), with its temples such as Kiyōmizu Kannon-dō ( Click
here ) and Benten-dō ( Click here ). Break for lunch at historic Izu-ei ( Click here ) ,
which specialises in barbecued eel - a classic Japanese dish.
After lunch take a walk through the old-fashioned arcade, Ameya-
yokochō ( Click here ) . Then take your pick from some of the excellent
smaller museums: the Shitamachi Museum ( Click here ), for a taste of pre-war
Tokyo; the National Science Museum ( Click here ) for the lowdown on the local
flora and fauna; or the Kyū Iwasaki-teien ( Click here ), for a glimpse into the life
of the late-19th-century elite.
