The Sights in a Day
The morning - usually the clearest time of day - is the best time to visit
the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Offices ( Click here ), for breath-
taking views over the city from the 45th-floor observatory. Back on the ground,
wind your way through the skyscraper district of Nishi-Shinjuku ( Click here ).
Then head over to Isetan ( Click here ), one of the city's finest department stores.
Pick up a bentō (boxed meal) from the depachika (department store basement
food hall) for lunch.
Walk to Shinjuku-gyoen ( Click here ) for a picnic on the lawn and spend
a relaxing hour strolling through the park. Then return to the hustle and
bustle for a bit of shopping - in Shinjuku you can get just about anything, includ-
ing music, electronics and fashion.
Shinjuku is famous for its nightlife. Have dinner at Donjaka ( Click here ) ,
a classic izakaya (Japanese style pub) with an excellent ji-zake (microw-
brewed sake) list. Depending on whether your tastes run high-brow or low, you
can catch a jazz concert at Shinjuku Pit Inn ( Click here ) or a cabaret spectacle at
Robot Restaurant ( Click here ) . For a nightcap, visit Zoetrope ( Click here ) - the
best whiskey bar in the country.
