Explore an old market
Take the north exit from Shimo-Kitazawa Station and look right for an en-
trance to a covered market . This former post-WWII black market now
houses stalls selling sundries and edibles. It's set to be demolished in a few
years despite fierce local resistance.
Check out Shimokita Garage Department
Head up the hill parallel to the train tracks, turn right and you'll see
Shimokita Garage Department ( 2-25-8 Kitazawa, Setagaya-ku; noon-8pm;
Odakyū Line to Shimo-Kitazawa, north exit) , a covered market with colourful murals
at the entrance. With stalls of DIY accessories and used clothing, it's like a flea
market with treasures galore.
Go vintage shopping
The bohemian vibe translates to a love of vintage clothing. Haight & Ash-
bury (2nd fl, 2-37-2 Kitazawa, Setagaya-ku; noon-10pm; Odakyu Line to Shimo-Kitaza-
wa, north exit) , the neighbourhood's best secondhand store, has everything to
re-enact any theatrical number, from the goatherd scene in The Sound of
Music to the opening of Cabaret .
Stop for espresso
Turn right onto Ichibangai for an espresso considered by many to be Tokyo's
best, at Bear Pond Espresso ( 5454-2486; www.bear-pond.com ; 2-36-12 Kitazawa,
Setagaya-ku; espresso ¥300-700; 10.30am-6pm Wed-Mon; Odakyū line to Shimokitaza-
wa, North exit) . Espresso is only served until 1pm Thursday to Monday.
