What would Tokyo look like left to its own natural devices? Since 1949 this park,
affiliated with the Tokyo National Museum, has let the local flora go wild. There
are wonderful walks through its forests, marshes and ponds, making this one of

7 Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum

Inside a beautiful art deco structure that was once a princely estate, the Teien Mu-
seum hosts mostly exhibitions of decorative arts. It began a comprehensive renov-
ation project in 2011 and plans to re-open sometime in 2014; check the website for

8 Meguro Parasitological Museum

One for fans of the grotesque: this small museum was established in 1953 by a
doctor concerned by the increasing number of parasites he was encountering in
postwar conditions. The centrepiece is an 8.8m-long tapeworm found in the body
of a 40-year-old Yokohama man. (
