Dine on fine French food atop an inverted cone in the atrium of the National Art
Center Tokyo (see 1 OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP ) . House specialities include duck
terrine and pan-fried scallops with risotto - all suprisingly reasonable given the
location and the name on the marquee. ( 5770-8161; www.paulbocuse.jp/eng/musee/in-

One of the city's most impressive restaurants, Tofuya-Ukai has only private rooms,
all of which overlook a beautiful, manicured garden. The kaiseki (Japanese haute
cuisine) courses feature delicate, handmade tofu served a variety of ways, but may
also include sashimi and grilled fish; considering the spread, it's excellent value.
Enquire when booking about vegetarian courses; reserve well in advance. (

This Kyoto-based, nationally famous kaiseki restaurant serves exquisitely pre-
pared seasonal dishes that are as beautiful as they are delicious (which earned
Kikunoi two Michelin stars). Kikunoi's Chef Murata has also written a book in
English on kaiseki , and the staff helpfully use it to explain the dishes. Reserva-
tions necessary. (
