It might look like a garish Eiffel Tower rip-off, but to Tokyoites, Tokyo Tower re-
mains a symbol of the city's post-WWII rebirth. At 333m and finished in 1958,
Tokyo Tower is 13m taller than the French tower that inspired its design. Lifts
whisk visitors up to the main observation deck at 150m; there's another 'special'

7 Zōjō-ji
BUDDHIST TEMPLE

One of the most important temples of the Jōdō (Pure Land) sect of Buddhism, this
is also the former funerary temple of the Tokugawa regime, and the tombs of six
shōgun stand out back. Zōjō-ji is best viewed at dusk when Tokyo Tower lights the

8 Nogi-jinja

This shrine honours General Nogi, hero of the Russo-Japanese War. Hours after
Emperor Meiji's funeral procession, Nogi and his wife committed ritual suicide
(Nogi disemboweled himself; his wife slit her throat). Nogi's residence is on the
