In-Depth Information
Above ground, there were four stories, while below ground was a series of rooms and in-
terconnected tunnels that housed gladiators and wild animals. An engineering marvel for
the age, mechanical devices were in place to hoist up the cages so that the animals were
places in the center of the arena.
In 847, an earthquake destroyed the southern walls of amphitheater; resulting in the façade
that we are much more familiar with today. The marble cladding was later also re purposed
for the construction of other historical points of interest, including St. Peter's Basilica.
Once an awe-inspiring symbol of power, the Colosseum is today one of the most visited
destinations in Rome.
