Flanking the entrance to the exhibitions housed within the structure are two fountains,
which are symbolic representations of the two seas that border Italy. The water feature on
the right represents the Tyrrhenian Sea, while one on the left represents the Adriatic Sea.
The statue situated at the very center of the monument is a depiction of Victor Emmanuel
himself, mounted upon a horse. Located at the foot of the statue is the Tomb of the
Unknown Soldier. This patriotic point of pride for Italy is guarded, day and night, by honor
guards selected respectively from the marines, infantry, and air divisions.
The exhibitions within the structure also include the Museo Centrale del Risorgimento,
which is a museum filled with artifacts related to Italy's unification.
This vast tribute to Vittorio Emanuele II is often considered to be an eyesore on Rome's
landscape. The bright white marble does not blend seamlessly with its surroundings, and it
is considered too large and garish for Rome's more subdued architecture.
