14. Piazza della Repubblica and the Fontana delle Naidi
Located at the summit of Viminil Hill, the Piazza della Repubblica is a semi-circular-shaped
Piazza. Leading out from the square is one of the primary Roman streets, Via Nazionale,
which makes this road a great starting point for many tours of Rome. Prior to being renamed,
the space was once known as Piazza dell'Esedra, and is often still referred to as such; this
can often prove to be confusing for tourists.
The Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri basilica is also located on this uniquely shaped
city square, and is housed inside part of the Diocletian baths. These ancient bathes once held
the honor of being the grandest and most sumptuous of Roman baths.
The fountain located within the piazza was originally known as the Acqua Pia, and originally
depicted lions. The lions were ultimately replaced in 1901 by sculptures of Naiads, which
led to the fountain being renamed the Fontana delle Naiad. There are three naiads represen-
ted on the fountain: the Nymph of the Underground Waters, the Nymph of the Oceans, and
the Nymph of the Rivers.
The Piazza della Repubblica is a great place to start your day of exploration, while appre-
ciating some of the finest architecture in all of Rome. Its prime location, right next to the
Termini station, makes this not only a convenient, but also an easy starting point for your
time spent in Rome.
