10. Via del Corso
More commonly referred to as the Corso, Via del Corso is one of the main streets that tra-
verses the historical heart of Rome. One of the most remarkable and notable features of this
Roman street is that it is absolutely straight (quite unusual in a city that is very often char-
acterized by its twisting roads and cramped alleys). The Corso is just over 32ft wide, which
means that it has ample space for two lanes of traffic, and a narrow sidewalk flanking each
side of the road. This may seem relatively small by today's standards, but it is rather gener-
ously wide given the standards of Ancient Rome. The road was first commissioned in 220
BC, which makes it one of the oldest roads in Rome.
