5. Trevi Fountain
Arguably one of the most beautiful Roman fountains, the Trevi Fountain is also one of
Rome's most famous fountains. Dominating the Trevi Square, the Fontana di Trevi is the
end of the famous aqueduct, Aqua Virgo, which was constructed in 19BC. The Aqua Virgo
transports water an astonishing 12 miles away, from the Salone Springs, and also supplies
many of the other historic roman fountains with fresh water.
The fountain was brought to life in 1762, almost 30 years after it was first commissioned by
Pope Clement XII. The monumental fountain is a Baroque-styled fountain and pays homage
to Neptune, the Roman god of the sea. Placed in the center of the fountain, Neptune is de-
picted riding upon a chariot that is in the shape of a shell. Two sea horses lead the chariot,
guided by a Triton; the horse on Neptune's left is depicted as being calm, while the horse
on Neptune's right is depicted as being somewhat out of control. The horses are symbolic of
the ever-fluctuating moods of the sea.
