In-Depth Information
Great bronze doors guard the entrance. The doors were once gold-covered, but the gold has
since been repurposed over the passage of time. This architectural and engineering feat is a
testament to the creativity of the ancient Romans. The interior is a breathtaking combina-
tion of innovation and ancient Roman tradition. With an oculus providing natural light for
the interior of the building, the dome remains today as the largest unreinforced concrete
dome. It was once gilded with gold, but has since been stripped away.
Once a temple to pagan gods, the Pantheon is a Roman Catholic Church, and is also now
the final resting place for many members of Italian royalty, as well as Renaissance artist
Raphael.
