people grew. Julius Cesar is just one of the Roman leaders said to have tried to instill a
sense of order to the Forum, and failed.
Monuments and statues were erected in the Roman Forum over the years in order to pay
homage to the great men who ran and otherwise influenced the rise of the Roman Empire.
Many of monuments still remain today, offering a feast of historical richness for visitors.
Some of the must-see spots in and around the area include the Temple of Vesta, the Arco
di Tito, and the Temple of Saturn. The Church of San Luca e Martina is also situated right
off of the square. Church of San Luca e Martina houses the relics of Saint Martina, and as
such is considered one of the holiest sites in Rome. Open just one day a week for visitors,
the church contains some of the best preserved sculptures and paintings.
Described as the Cradle of Democracy for the Roman Empire, this once popular gathering
place for Romans is a sprawling ruin of historical and architectural treasure.
