Figure 11.10 Structure of the expert system in the ENFO Knowledge Base (ENFO, 2013).
As an example, the ENFO knowledge base is introduced in detail in Chapter 12 in
this Volume, and here we introduce the expert system of the knowledge base in the
form of a matrix in Figure 11.10. The environmental compartments, the chemical
substances, wastes and contaminated sites are presented in combination with risk
management tools such as physico-chemical, biological, ecological and toxicological
assessment tools, modeling tools, risk assessment and life cycle assessments as well
as risk reduction technologies. The combinations result in a two-dimensional matrix,
where one can find information on all combinations, e.g. ecotoxicological testing of
waste, or chemical analysis of air, etc. In addition to the “technological'' matrices,
there are also those which contain legal information and basic scientific knowledge.
Environmental information can be found in the form of simple description, photos,
e-courses or maps in the ENFO knowledge base. As an example, Figure 11.11 shows
the identified contaminated sites in Hungary. When clicking on any of the points,
a window opens with the information of the locality and the contaminants (ENFO
Matrix, 2013). All kind of information can be uploaded online.
