term and demanding issue, it was decided at the end of the project that the network
activities should be continued in form of a follow-up network EURODEMO

EURODEMO
promotes and encourages the use of soil and groundwater
remediation technologies through demonstration, with emphasis on the use
of sustainable and cost-effective remediation practices. This mission is based
upon national/regional structures and needs, stimulated through pan-European
exchange. Our goal is to assist and connect stakeholders on good quality demon-
stration practices across Europe. Technology innovation faces market barriers and
needs support for increased and sound implementation in practice.

The Hungarian project on Modern Engineering Tools for Environmental Man-
agement (MOKKA, 2004-2008) in cooperation with EURODEMO and EUGRIS
laid down the basics of the efficient environmental risk management of contami-
nated sites. Innovative risk assessment, i.e., site assessment and monitoring tools
and risk reduction measures, including numerous remediation technologies, were
developed within the project. As an outcome of the research project, a special edi-
tion in Land Contamination & Reclamation was published (Gruiz et al., 2009) and
a knowledge base, today called ENFO (2013), was established. ENFO knowledge
base contains basic scientific information and databases on innovative physico-
chemical, biological and ecotoxicological site assessment end monitoring methods
and in situ and ex situ physico-chemical, thermal and biological soil remedia-
tion technologies. Based on the initial databases, the complex knowledge base of
ENFO was developed including glossary, maps and decision-support tools cover-
ing all areas of the environment: chemical substances, minerals, air, water, soil,
waste and contaminated land. The knowledge base is provided with a user-friendly
web interface and online data entry.
The past and present EU projects and the existing stakeholder networks show that
there is considerable interest in efficient environmental management. Due to coordi-
nated efforts on a European scale, relevant progress has been made at European and
national levels to improve existing remediation practice. Currently, new developments
are under way, working toward harmonizing and strengthening markets by raising
confidence levels by means of verification measures.
As the above described initiatives indicate, public and expert participation are
essential components, if such efforts are to be successful and deliver the targeted effects.
Moreover, efforts on a European scale need to be translated to national scale and into
national frameworks in order to achieve the desired effect.
