soil and groundwater contamination a reality. SNOWMAN has established a research
program and implemented coordinated research calls.
Started as a Polish RTD network in 2002, ENVITECH-NET (2013) worked to
integrate applied research with the needs of industry, and to facilitate development of
innovative environmental technologies. Its primary objective was to contribute toward
an effective implementation of the ETAP. It has 60 member organizations from 8
European countries.
A broad stakeholder network in the environmental technology industry, the Euro-
pean Committee of Environmental Technology Suppliers Associations (EUCETSA,
2013), has been active since 1999. Its mission is to promote the international compet-
itiveness of the European environmental technology industry. Its activities are aimed
at identifying the barriers to growth in order to propose solutions. Additionally, they
promote awareness of the commercial and environmental benefits of environmental
technologies and strive to win general support for a favorable legislative and fiscal
framework.
Some European projects related to technology verification are introduced briefly
here:
-
TESTNET (2006-2009) Towards a European verification system for environ-
mentally sound technology. It main goal is to test the testing system (TESTNET
2013);
-
TRITECH ETV (2006-2009) is a pilot scheme for an EU environmental technolo-
gies verification system incorporating soil remediation, waste water treatment and
energy related technologies. Its aim is to establish a mechanism to objectively vali-
date the performance of innovative environmental technology products by means
of new environmental technologies being introduced into the market place at a
much quicker rate. TRITECH Final report (2009) with 15 case study examples
of technologies that have undergone the verification process can be found on the
project website (TRITECH ETV, 2013).
-
AirTV is an ongoing project of a testing network for verification of air emissions
abatement technologies. The first proposal of AirTV for technological aspects
will cover the verification of the following technologies: low-emission gas burn-
ing, Genano technology for dust ionization and filtration, removal of low VOC
concentrations, wet scrubbing, bioscrubbing for removal of ammonia from stable
air at a farm, particle cleaning, regenerative thermal oxidation and new plasma
oxidation for odor treatment (AirTV, 2013).
-
EURODEMO (2005-2008), a European coordination action for demonstration of
effective soil and groundwater remediation. EURODEMO was the first European
network for demonstrating innovative remediation technologies. In EURODEMO,
innovative remediation technologies were supported by providing comprehensive
information through reports, directories and promotional workshops. The infor-
mation provided targeted the defined needs of end users, and interesting national
developments and knowledge sources for individual technologies, applications
and processes were identified and generated (EURODEMO, 2013). The work of
EURODEMO was seen as a vital component of the multi-strand approach that is
needed to challenge entrenched market barriers for new technologies and to sup-
port the expansion of field implementation of technology innovation throughout
