In-Depth Information
Regulation EC 2150 (2002) creates a framework for the production of community
waste management statistics. This framework should provide the EU with regular and
comparable data in order to monitor the implementation of the community policy on
the generation, recovery, and disposal of waste.
Additional regulations on waste management in Europe are listed below:
-
Competitiveness of the recycling industries (1998)
-
Landfill of waste (1999)
-
Waste incineration (2000)
-
Shipments of waste (2006).
A basic legal tool for the regulation of hazardous waste in Europe, the Basel
Convention (1989) which entered into force in 1992, defines hazardous wastes (gives a
list as Annex VIII and IX) and lays down rules to control transboundary movement and
disposal of wastes hazardous to human health and the environment. UNEP prepared
graphics for the Basel Convention on Hazardous Waste, trade in waste, recycling and
related topics (Basel Convention Graphics, 1999). More recent information can be
found in Vital Waste Graphics (2004).
Other EU regulations that deal with waste from consumer goods include the
following:
-
Packaging and packaging waste (Packaging, 1994);
-
Disposal of polychlorinated biphenyls and polychlorinated terphenyls (PCB,
1996);
-
Disposal of spent batteries and accumulators (Batteries, 2006);
-
Disposal of waste oils (Waste oil, 1975);
-
Management of end-of-life vehicles (End-of-life vehicles, 2000);
-
The reusing, recycling, and recovering of motor vehicles (Re-re-re vehicles, 2005);
-
Waste electrical and electronic equipment (E-waste, 2002);
-
Management of waste from extractive industries (Extractive industries, 2006);
-
Ship dismantling (2007);
-
Removal and disposal of disused offshore oil and gas installations (Oil and gas
installations, 1998);
-
Use of sewage sludge in agriculture (1986);
-
Port infrastructure: facilities for ship-generated waste and cargo residues (Port and
ship waste, 2000);
-
Disposal surveillance and monitoring of titanium dioxide industrial waste (Tita-
nium dioxide waste, 1978);
-
Shipments of radioactive substances (Radioactive substances, 1993);
-
Shipments of radioactive waste: supervision and control (Radioactive waste,
2006);
-
Situation in 1999 and prospects for radioactive waste management (Radioactive
waste management, 1998);
-
Management of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste (Radioactive waste
management, 2004).
