In-Depth Information
in one preserve, and trial 0, with founders in two preserves. Under the
lower growth rates, there is a signifi cant difference (p = 0.02) in unique
alleles retained, although the difference is small: placing the founders in
one preserve (P) has a 2.1% increase over splitting the founders between
two preserves (Q). After 13 generations, the greatest difference in observed
heterozygosity was approximately 0.987 for trial N versus 0.957 for trial Q,
a difference of 2% (full data not shown). In this example, then, if the species
is growing at higher rates, population growth is higher only when founders
are divided, and unique allele retention is higher only when growth rates
are lower and founders are placed in only one preserve.
A Dioecious Perennial
All of the comparative trials in the previous section modeled bisexual, self-
incompatible annuals. The next trials examine corridor effects in a dioecious
perennial species. These trials model a plant such as Lindera benzoin , which
was the subject of modeling in an earlier chapter. The basic trial for this set
of examples is trial 1, with the following conditions:
Source population: 30 loci, each with 100 different alleles, each allele with
frequency of 0.01.
<Dioecious value=“true”/>
Onset of offspring reproduction is generation 6, reaching a maximum at
generations 15 to 45, after which there is a decline in reproduction.
x = generation; y = relative contribution. When two input statements have
generations with different y values, generations between those statements
have y values that are interpolated.
