this trial approximates what occurred at West Salem over the 100 years
since its establishment. After 100 rounds of reproduction, compared to
the basic trial a, population b is exhibiting a relative decrease in growth
rate due to its more crowded dispersal conditions (even though there is a
longer tail of dispersal). As expected, decreasing or increasing the rate of
offspring production alters population growth accordingly (trials e and f,
respectively), these trials being conducted to determine how the different
growth rates might affect the transmission of founder unique alleles to the
descendants. Trial e is approximately 1/10th the size of the simulated West
Salem trial a and trial b populations at generation 100.
For all trials, estimated heterozygosity is approximately 93.5% for the
founders, immediately dropping to between 92% and 93% and then declining
less than 1% across the 100 generational bouts of mating (
Fig. 16.2A)
