West Salem is a restricted area, and the main area of chestnut spread thus far
was approximately 840 m by 560 m according to maps. If, in a pure stand of
chestnuts (which West Salem is not), mature trees are approximately 3 to 4 m
apart (say 3.5 m), then there are approximately 38,400 potentially available
grid points (grid = 240 by 160) for mature trees at a maximum. Given that
surveys at West Salem suggest that approximately 4,000 individuals 20
years of age or older were standing approximately 100 years after the initial
planting, then 10% of the potentially available grid points were occupied.
Thus, the grid representing West Salem was designated as:
<Region XL=“0” XH=“239” YL=“0” YH=“159”>
</Region>
<Number_Generations value=“101”/>
Each trial was run from the initial conditions 30 times, and then averages
of output values were given:
<Number_Runs value=“30”/>
Only nine founders are introduced since the possible 10th founder had no
novel alleles. This potential 10th founder was also separated by a much
greater distance (130 m distant) than separated the other founder trees by
over 300 m, occurring on the other side of an intervening fi eld crop fi eld,
and thus may not have been as great a contributor of seed or pollen. Each
founder is assigned an age of 1,000 so that they are fully reproductive at
the start of the trial. Being of that age also prevents the founders from
dying during a trial replicating what has occurred at West Salem, although
