are not part of the most recent cohort. At a particular later age, a population
may consist of members of the newest cohort plus individuals originating
in several different previous ages, that is, from different cohorts. The age
of an individual is tracked as the number of population-level bouts of
reproduction it has passed through, with the fi rst mating bout in which it is
produced assigned as age = 0. Throughout the remainder of this topic, we
use “age of a population” and “number of generations” interchangeably,
both indicating the number of rounds of mating that have occurred in the
population.
