Ideal Nutrient Ratios
10:1 calcium to magnesium (7:1 for grasses and sandy soil)
2:1 phosphate to potash (4:1 for grasses and sandy soil)
1:1 potash to sulfate
Below is an excerpt from the same soil test sample given previously. Other than potassi-
um, all of the major nutrients are low — nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium and magnesium.
The ratios are also skewed. Based on the calcium to magnesium ratio, there may be com-
paction, grassy weeds, plant predators and unhealthy plants. The phosphate to potash ratio
indicates the same problems, as well as potential broadleaf weeds. We'll look at how to fix
this throughout the rest of the topic.
