• Healthy soil depends on the web of relationships between many different kinds of
organisms.
• Microorganisms, animals and plants scavenge the soil, water and air for nutrition.
• Through competition and cooperation, microorganisms, animals and plants recycle
and trade nutrients, create healthy soil, provide each other with defense and other
services that keep the system balanced.
• These all have important roles to play in creating a healthy garden, and our job is
to tweak the system to provide all of them optimal living conditions so they can do
