All of the limiting factors influence each other. For example, nutrient imbalances create
poor living conditions for microbes. If calcium is below 60% and/or magnesium gets too
high, it renders microbial inoculants, biostimulants and micronutrient sprays much less ef-
fective. On the other hand, a lack of organic matter and of a healthy soil food web make it
difficult to change nutrient ratios, because while you may add the correct materials, the
microbes need to do some of the work of rearranging them and the organic matter needs to
be there to hold them. Just as plants, animals and microbes are interdependent in our
garden, so are water, organic matter, biology, nutrients and energy.
