In-Depth Information
Purslane (a.k.a., pursley, pussley, common
purslane, pursley duckweed, wild portulaca)
Purslane, Portulaca oleracea , is an annual that reproduces by seed. It is sometimes used
for greens. Pigs and chickens love it as a succulent. Purslane grows down close in a mat
about a foot in diameter from a shallow fibrous root system.
Smooth leaves cluster, are simple and broadest near the apex. Small, yellow flowers are
in the axils. Fruit is a capsule.
Control is simple during the early stages, but even physical removal serves up a phe-
nomenon — the plant continuing to live and mature seeds after being uprooted. Seeds can-
not endure and set new plants if cation balance is achieved and pH is properly structured
with calcium, magnesium and potassium in an Albrecht equilibrium. Even more important
is regular introduction of air into the soil.
