In-Depth Information
Summary
• Pesticides are toxic to all life and fail to solve the root cause of the problem, which
is unhealthy soil and plants.
• We don't know the long-term consequences of GMOs, but what we know so far
tells us they have no place in our gardens. This means no GMO seeds and no or-
ganic fertilizers that could have come from GMO plants, such as alfalfa meal, can-
ola meal, corn gluten meal, cotton meal, or soy meal.
• Like pesticides, most chemical fertilizers cause many problems to soil and the soil
food web, so we absolutely must stop using most of them, too.
• A select few chemical fertilizers can be intelligently used to improve the health of
the soil and plants beyond that of organic products.
• My top chemical fertilizer is MAP (11-52-0) for phosphorus, especially when I
can't find soft rock phosphate.
• Soft rock phosphate, ammonium sulfate and MAP can help a plant to begin fruiting
when used before or early on in the initial reproductive stages of the plant, as can
the recipes listed at the end of this chapter.
