left, Torksey itself lies 800m to the north, its stone church tower overshadowed by the brick
and stone remains of its 16th century Tudor castle after it was burned by the Royalists in the
Civil War. A set of power station towers rise downstream at Sturton le Steeple. These modern
edifices aside, it is easy to imagine that the current sweeping along the Trent's wide course
has changed little since the days when Torksey was a thriving Roman port linked by a navig-
ation across the flat country to Lindum Colonia.
