In-Depth Information
From the Chequers Inn the canal moves back to be followed by the A1 for a kilometre.
This is perhaps not as noisy as might be expected because of the screen of trees.
A series of three aqueducts includes one over the River Idle, the valley of which is fol-
lowed over the rest of the canal's course. Old wharf buildings are accompanied by modern
buildings in complementary design on the East Retford side of the river by Retford Lock, the
red ford named after the clay in the River Idle. The Wharf restaurant follows just before the
canal passes under the old Great North Road bridge, now reduced to the status of a minor
town street. The canal passes King's Park. Notable town buildings include the flamboyant
town hall of 1868 and a cruciform church with a peal of ten bells and protection in the form
of an 11kg cannon brought back from Turkey.
