In-Depth Information
German's Lock on Burscough Moss with extra balance beams .
The Grade II Rufford New Hall dates merely from 1760, the Heskeths moving here from
the Old Hall. It still retains its icehouse in the garden.
The final lock has diamond gates at the bottom to act as tidal doors. These only open on to
the tidal River Asland or Douglas at high water to give access to the River Ribble and Preston
or the Irish Sea. It is significant that the banks are high, steep and muddy and that the tidal
river flows very fast. Timing is important for ongoing trips and advice is given locally.
