The B5422 crosses Red Lion Bridge and then the A59 passes over again. St Andrew's
church of the late 19th century was built in 13th century style to blend with Unsworth Chapel
close by, the oldest church on Merseyside, dating from 1290. Under a beech in the church-
yard is the ornate 1936 tomb of Frank Hornby, who invented Meccano in 1901 and whose
company also produced Dinky Toys, clockwork Hornby Railways and electric Hornby Dublo
trains. As such, he did more for the country's engineering skills base through the 20th century
than anyone else and his contribution to Britain's economy is inestimable.
