In-Depth Information
Lock is near a former cornmill, the A62 Leeds Road, to which the name applies, crossing on
an extended stone arch. A sports field notice has warned about the danger of javelins but not
what to do if one is thrown in your direction. Beyond, North Moor provides an impressive
backdrop to Kirkheaton.
The following railway viaduct across the canal was intended to carry nothing less than the
main line between England and Scotland. The canal arch collapsed during construction in
1866. Its yellow colour contrasts with the dark blue used for the rest of the structure. In prac-
tice, it had to settle for the Kirkburton Dick shuttle service.
Longlands or Vernon's Lock at Deighton is followed by Ladgrave or Johnson's Lock, the
latter with a very similar layout to Riddings. Another disused railway viaduct follows, again
in blue brick but with 15 arches this time. Completed in 1910, it saw only 27 years of use.
