In-Depth Information
Butterhouse Green Tunnel is surrounded by greenery .
The canal dives into the 282m Hyde Bank Tunnel, a squat structure with the towpath run-
ning over the top and a slight kink in the middle, to emerge among wooded banks that are
covered with celandines, bluebells and red campion in early summer.
Beyond Romiley, a high railway bridge of almost tunnel proportions crosses the canal. The
first half has significantly smaller dimensions than the far end and the step must have caused
the arches to ring with curses from southbound boats many times over the years.
Naylor's abrasive mill is the first of an increasing number of mills, many derelict. Some
provide an atmosphere of decaying charm while others could benefit from the attentions of a
bulldozer, an idea that is receiving some positive application around Hyde.
Captain Clark's Bridge, at Hyde, is a fine, stone roving bridge and is paired with another
roving bridge with cast-iron deck to take the towpath across the canal. After passing a mill
the slightly realigned canal is crossed by the M67 on a bridge that is unusual in having the
luxury of lighting from underneath in the daytime.
