the heavily fortified Canal & River Trust office, to supply coal, salt and sand wharves. An
arm opposite served the Manure Wharf, which supplied night soil and manure from the cor-
poration stables to the Beswick Sanitary Works and farmers further along the canal.
Ducie Street Basin had a massive warehouse for storing high-quality salt from Northwich
but it was burned down a few years ago. Still present is the impressive London Warehouse, a
railway warehouse built in 1867 with wrought- and cast-iron to reduce fire risk.
The Ashton Canal joins the Rochdale Canal at Ducie Street Junction, alongside the Dale
Street car park. This occupies the filled-in Dale Street Basin, overlooked by one remaining
warehouse. To the west, a lock continues the Cheshire Ring through the centre of Manchester.
