Despite its connections, the Ashton Canal, designed by Thomas Brown, was built as an isol-
ated narrow canal from Ashton-under-Lyne to Manchester. It was opened to Ancoats in 1796,
extended to Ducie Street in 1799 and connected to the Rochdale Canal the following year.
Initially it was used to take fresh vegetables from the market gardens of Dukinfield into
Manchester and later it served many small coal mines in the area. Commercial traffic ceased
in 1957 with the last pleasure boat in 1961. Restoration began in 1968. Full restoration also
preserved the Cheshire Ring, including the lower end of the Rochdale Canal. There is now
considerable use by narrowboats.
