Tib Lock has the Canal Bar alongside with plenty of the customary broken glass and the
A5103 passing over a tunnel. The Manchester Sound derived from the Hacienda Club and
featured such names as Take That, Oasis and The Stone Roses. It is now apartments. What at
first glance appear to be four wharf cranes on the side of a modern building metamorphose
into four griffin-like sculptures with chains in their mouths.
Many Roman remains have been found around the area and there would probably have
been more if the fort of 79 had not been largely destroyed by the construction of the 200-arch
19th century railway viaduct, which now carries the Manchester to Northwich and Metrolink
lines by the canal. The Dukes 92 public house takes its name and number from Duke's Lock,
the last on the canal, and is located in the stables of the Merchants Warehouse of 1827, the
oldest surviving great warehouse.
The Rochdale Canal joins the Bridgewater Canal as canals lead off in all directions and a
network of railway and footbridges provide a hive of transport activity.
