In-Depth Information
Tuel Lane Tunnel at Sowerby Bridge .
After the lock in front of the William IV is the Tuel Lane Tunnel. The 100m long tunnel
replaces a section filled in to carry the A58 and a road off it. Reopened in 1996, this is one of
the most complicated examples of canal restoration work. The tunnel curves at the end and
is subject to considerable turbulence from the lock. It may not be entered without the lock
keeper's permission. Locks on the canal were set at a 2.7-3.0m rise to allow interchange of
gates. The Tuel Lane Lock replaces two former locks and, at 5.94m deep, is now the deepest
inland lock in the country. The walking route is past the Lock Keepers Tavern.
