Stretford Wharf, by the cemetery, had steps up out of the canal so that any horse that fell
in could be recovered. There were stables close by at the packet changeover point, connec-
ted by the lengthsman's cottage. His most important task was to watch Barfoot Bridge over
the River Mersey, hence Watch House, which gives its name to the boat cruising club that
occupies the building today. The water is generally opaque. The canal company built a weir
upstream to pass floodwater away from Barfoot Bridge, an aqueduct with a single 20m span
over the Mersey.
