For 2km at Alton the bed has water, albeit shallow. Although it skirts the southern bound-
ary of Alton Towers, Britain's largest amusement park with the highest number of paying
visitors - over 27,000,000 per year - the 1980 venue remains hidden and nothing more than
the screams of punters is heard. On the other hand, the castle, with Pugin's mixture of Scot-
tish and French Gothic restyling, is the dominant building, high on its crag on the south side
of the valley.
