In-Depth Information
The exceptionally tall bridge in Woodseaves Cutting .
There is nothing to indicate crossing the line of the Roman road from Swindon to Water
Eaton. The following turnover bridge, accompanied by Wolverhampton Boat Club with its
crane, is important not so much because it takes the canal from the West Midlands to Stafford-
shire but because it moves from a built-up area to open country, a situation that lasts to
Chester.
Near Codsall, the canal passes over the young River Penk, fed by Codsall Sewage Works
and passing a wood with a nature reserve and trail. The canal has extensive views to the
north-west before narrowing into a rocky cutting, a taste of things to come. Upper Hattons
bridge has a keystone with the date 1802. This end of the canal was built between 1826 and
1835 but a mason made an error in the 1960s.
