The final lock down to the River Severn is one of the wonders of the canal network. The
tidal range here is one of the largest in the world, the river drying out around the dock en-
trance at low tide so the lock is used only on the upper part of the tide. Not content with this,
the lock adjoins a tidal basin some 200m long and 100m wide with mooring fingers project-
ing out from the sides. It is capable of holding ships up to 5,000t.
There is a magnificent view down the estuary to the Severn Bridges silhouetted on the ho-
rizon.
