The missing link in the coast-to-coast canal was the descent from the canal basin in Tiver-
ton (Hardy's Tivworthy) to the River Exe and then its canalisation to Exeter. The scale of the
problem is easily gauged from the Tiverton basin, which looks down on the roofs of the town
and commands fine views across to the hills northwards.
