In-Depth Information
The weir is about 1m high and slopes, more gently to the right of the chute in the centre.
Kelston Brass Mill and annealing ovens add interesting architecture and the adjacent work-
ers' cottages are some of the oldest known in existence.
The Avon Valley Country Park proves popular, with mini steam-train rides on the 127mm
gauge Strawberry Line, quad bikes, adventure play area, barbecue area, pets corner and a fal-
conry that can be seen from the river.
Keynsham was known to the nation's youth in the post-war years as it was spelled out sev-
eral times per night on Radio Luxembourg in support of Horace Batchelor's football pools-
beating scheme. It would seem that anyone with a surefire system should be using it for his
own bets rather spending money to advertise it to the world in general. It inspired the title of
the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band's Keynsham album.
The river makes a sharp turn in front of Hanham Court and enters a dark Pennant sandstone
gorge. Some of the craft moored along this reach are of substantial size. The banks are just as
popular because of the Chequers Inn, The Boathouse bar and Old Lock & Weir Ale House.
Hanham Toll Office was built at Hanham Lock, the start of the Port of Bristol.
The weir can be shot in suitable craft if conditions permit. This was the previous tidal
limit but high tides can still reach here or even Keynsham, despite construction of a weir at
Netham. Even powered craft can pass over it on high tides, when it drowns.
